It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away on August 9, 2017 of

JAN DE HEER
Founder of Holland Colours

Jan was a visionary and the driving force behind Holland Colours, the company he founded in 1979 with a group of like-minded people. The idea to develop an innovative way of pigment encapsulation resulted in a paradigm shift in the industry. Under his entrepreneurial spirit, Holland Colours has grown into a listed company with over 400 employees and close to Euro 80 million in revenue.

Jan was very committed to family values and active employee participation. He implemented a rather unique model of employee participation via Holland Pigments BV.

After his retirement in 1997, he served as a member of the Supervisory Board of Holland Colours and then continued his keen interest in our business and employees on a more personal basis.

His legacy forms the basis and the future for Holland Colours: he will be remembered with respect and gratitude.

Our thoughts and sympathies go to his wife Truus, his children, grandchildren and other family members. We wish them strength during these sad and difficult times.

Holland Colours launches Holcopearl® 2287: a brand new product for coloring PET packaging materials

With the launch of polymer-based Holcopearl® 2287, Holland Colours is applying its PET packaging knowhow to today’s challenges: delivering deeper colors with optimal dispersion on automated lines running at higher and higher speeds.

Holland Colours’ low melting Holcobatch® and Holcoprill product ranges have been colorant staples among food packaging producers for more than 30 years. The company’s unique encapsulating technique supports higher pigment concentrations, lower dosing, lower costs, and better distribution. Result: generations of experts have made Holland Colours their supplier of choice when it comes to coloring PET preforms.

Along the way, the company has accumulated vast amounts of experience and data on PET packaging and production – from the various production processes and equipment, to food safety compliance around the world. Handily so, because when it became clear there was a need for an additional PET colorant solution, Holland Colours had the expertise and processes in place to move fast.

Turning customer feedback into action
“The idea to develop Holcopearl came from customer feedback and the trends we see in the industry and among our customers and their customers,” says Wilfried Grob, Sales & Marketing Manager Europe at Holland Colours. Among these trends are the moves to higher production speeds, deeper colors, more sensitive dosage settings, and the switch to sperical PET granules instead of cylindrical ones. Plants today are also increasingly automated and are focused on high efficiency. “We noticed the developments in the market and decided to develop an additional solution specifically for the PET industry”, continues Grob.

Leveraging three decades of expertise
A further key benefit is that Holcopearl® has been developed with the Holland Colours’ Product Stewardship Program behind it. Holland Colours does not only look at existing product compliances and declarations in line with European and FDA regulations, but also runs these programs on new product developments. This involves taking an active approach to understanding the regulatory challenges the company’s customers face.

By meeting all these criteria, Holcopearl® 2287 becomes the Holland Colours solution for today’s production environments. The Holcopearl® 2287 has a higher melting point and can be used with all dosing equipment. The granules are round – hence the word ‘pearl’ in the name.

The Natural Collection

Colorants for Use with Biopolymers

Richmond, Indiana – Holland Colours Americas Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of The Natural Collection, a new bio-derived colorant for use in cosmetic packaging and other commercial applications.

A global specialist in customer-specific coloring products, Holland Colours is the first company to develop a product line in which color pigments are non-toxic and developed specifically for PET and biopolymers.

“The Natural Collection represents a truly sustainable solution in polymer packaging, one that combines aesthetics and technology with environmentally friendly materials,” says Lydia Swan, Sales & Marketing Manager, Holland Colours Americas. “Today’s consumers expect eco-friendly packaging material to break down completely, including the color components. However, most available colorants in the industry today have few, if any, bio-derived components. The Natural Collection is the exception.”

Holland Colours’ latest innovation uses non-petroleum-based pigments and a bio-derived carrier that provides colorants made entirely from renewable resources. Many of these pigments are FDA compliant, making them suitable for packaging and other food-contact applications. Moreover, The Natural Collection palette offers converters a 100% non-petroleum based colorant option that can be used for a variety of biopolymer applications.

The Natural Collection will initially target the branding and packaging needs of cosmetics and personal care markets. As with other Holland Colours’ Holcobatch products, benefits of the environmentally friendly colorant include low-dosing, low-dust, free-flowing and easy processing. Additionally, The Natural Collection provides competitive advantages in terms of branding.

“At Holland Colours, our goal of being a sustainable company aligns with our corporate values of stewardship. We continually strive to improve the health of the communities we serve. Holland Colours was initially founded in 1979 by a group of individuals who were experts in pigments and saw a need to dramatically change the way in which colorants were being used in packaging at the time. Their innovative spirit resulted in a breakthrough product that ultimately revolutionized the market. The Natural Collection incorporates this same innovation, delivering unmatched coloring performance for a wide range of polymers, while being sustainable, eco-friendly and green,” adds Swan.

The Natural Collection….  True to your Brand. True to the Earth.

plasticstodayPlastics Today article 'Trendspotting: Plastic packaging in transition'

Keri Embree, Managing Editor at Plastics Today, wrote an intresting article about the most innovative technologies that are sure to be a hit in the marketplace in 2017.

"Since dairy-based drinks have a limited shelf life, Holland Colors NV (Apeldoorn, Netherlands) presented at K 2016 its new Holcomer III solid additive that permits the production of PET mono-layer packaging solutions for UHT milk. It yields 100% protection from UV radiation and up to 99% protection from visible light. The obvious advantage of this solution is its mono-layer structure, which lends itself better to recycling than the multi-layer equivalent."

laboratory

Holland Colours Laboratory takes customer care to new level

Holland Colours announces the completion of a €330,000 upgrade of our laboratory facilities at our headquarters in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, plus the installation of additional equipment at our labs in the UK and Hungary.

Upgrades in the Netherlands, Hungary and UK

The comprehensive refit of our Dutch laboratory, which took 12 months, plus new equipment for our labs in the UK and Hungary, enables us to enhance the services we offer our customers. Central to this is the purchase of two PET blow-molding machines, two injection molding machines for producing plaques (one of each for our Dutch and UK labs), and two testing roll mill machines (one for our Dutch lab, bringing the total number there to four, and one for our lab in Hungary).

Faster and better customer care

The additional equipment will enable us to serve current and new customers in the PET/PP/PE and flexible PVC markets significantly better. For example, having our own blow-molding and injection molding-machines in-house means we can now send sample PET bottles within 24 hours of request. The additional rolling machine enables us to provide faster and more comprehensive service and support to building and construction companies. This includes providing samples more quickly, while also being able to handle more requests for technical help. It will also add an additional layer of certainty to our quality control, so offering our customers peace of mind.

The latest coloring software

Further underlining our commitment to excellent customer care, the improvements at our Dutch lab include the acquisition of the latest Minolta coloring software, which makes it possible to see immediately the effect of small changes in pigments. Other upgrades focus on health and safety. “We incorporate employee health and safety goals in our sustainability targets, organizational goals and strategic ambitions,” says Nico Beekman (Laboratory manager Holland Colours Apeldoorn). “Therefore,’ he continues, “the layout of our Dutch lab has also been reconceived to create more space, and the air conditioning, air purifier and fume dust extraction equipment has been renewed.”

Working around the world as one

Holland Colours has color matching laboratories in the Netherlands, UK, USA, Hungary and Indonesia. All our laboratories serve local, regional and global customers and support each other and their customers as necessary. They share polymer and application knowledge, knowledge of pigments and the optimum ways to apply them, to provide the best in customer care worldwide.

holcomer Introducing Holcomer III

Holland Colours is proud to announce the introduction of the next generation of our advanced light barrier technology for UHT milk packaging: Holcomer III. With this more economic version of Holcomer we can help UHT milk brands save money on the switch from traditional carton packs with little design-freedom and three layer HDPE bottles to the latest lightweight monolayer dairy PET packaging. This also means we can assist PET packaging manufacturers in expanding their portfolio by offering single-layer UHT-compliant packaging at lower cost than was possible until now.

As a specialist in customer-specific colouring products, we have used our experience to become the first company to globally roll out our advanced light barrier technology for monolayer PET UHT milk packaging. “Our Holcomer sparked a revolution in the dairy packaging market.”, says Robert Harmsen (CEO of Holland Colours). “I am excited that we have now developed the third generation of this product line as a logical follow- up, offering even more benefits to our customers”, he concludes.

Holcomer III: optimal cost-effiency ratio

With lower cost Holcomer III, we can help even more PET manufacturers and milk brands make the switch to advanced monolayer PET packaging for UHT milk. Holcomer III again underlines our commitment to giving our packaging industry customers real competitive advantages in terms of branding and cost-effective production processes. These include freedom of design, beautiful high gloss finishes, no deformation, no delamination – and the security of knowing you are working with the expert in the industry.
